This shed a light. I was thinking the installation cd was borking.

Since both installation and live works, but installed one does not, I
don't think it has anything to do with xorg.
ipw3495 wireless cards had freezing problems. The rfkill switch (being
on or off on boot) or any other switch a like (sometimes the bluetooth)
might have caused this problem. We had a bug report about it and it is
(IIRC) fixed in 2007.1 . Try messing with the rfkill switch
(radio/wireless/bluetooth on/off switch) of the notebook.
