From g.duale at otasc.org Sat Mar 1 01:56:58 2008 From: g.duale at otasc.org (=?ISO-8859-1?Q?Guillaume_Dual=E9?=) Date: Sat, 01 Mar 2008 00:56:58 +0100 Subject: [Pardus-devel] Pardus on Asus EEE Pc Message-ID: <47C89BCA.7010100@otasc.org> Hi, I just finish to install "Pardus-Kurulan-2007.3.iso" on my Asus EEE Pc. The machine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asus_Eee_PC To install Pardus, I need to connect an external screen, because the screen resolution is 800?480 and the installer is not usuable. I don't see the bottom of the installer, so I can't click on next, etc. But with a 17 inch external flat screen, I do the install with no problem :-) A bad thing, due to the hardware, is that the install take approximatively 2 hours. I take 2 pictures, for fun :) http://www.otasc.org/tmp/pardus/ Another info: The network card and the wireless card don't work by default. I don't try to install some atheros module or another else. As you can see, the Xorg works fine :-) In fact, I installed it from an external usb dvd drive. See you, Guillaume. I want to try and give you guys better bug reports which will make your life easy, but I was not able to actually find what the error is in the first place. One issue that cropped up on an HCL laptop was that the boot sequence would stop after "setting up environment variables". So, I couldnt even install pardus, or load the live CD. I couldnt figure out anything beyond that. Eren made a patch to mudur so that I could try and find out what it is ... but by then my friend had sent back the laptop and purchased a new Compaq one (and asked me to install Ubuntu on it :/) > I think we are OK, we are currently working on 2008 (or whatever will be its name) and its new features while trying to maintain 2007 actively. Great! Good work. The ISO file contains so much unnecessary packages for Asus EEE PC, also you know, KDE will work so slowly. I wished that someone had bought me Asus EEEPC as a present but didn't occur :) I was just thinking of making Mini Pardus (maybe, DSP, damned small pardus?) which contains XFCE as a default desktop manager. AT pressent I have been using madwifi which I downloaded from the madwifi site and applied the patch manually. The install of Pardus on the eee is a tight squeeze. I had to remove pretty much everything. All unneeded drivers and software. I am left with pretty much a stock kde install. If you leave the machine in its default state then pisi cannot update the pardus-2007 package list, never mind the contrib list. Without some serious work it will not fit on the machine. At my best I have managed to get about 600mb free whilst maintaining a usable pardus installation. To do this you have to remove openoffice and firefox and then pretty much all drivers and media tools. I have no idea why the install is so slow, but with a bit of ware the install speeds up a bit. I have installed pardus about 3 times now as I have been tinkering with it and made in unbootable. But on the plug side it takes me about 1 hour 20 mins to install now. The problem with not seieng the buttons is trivial. You cna work out where it is based on the help sidebar on the right. When the down button is highlighted, press tab twice and you go to the next button so you can proceed with the install. I have filed a bug report about the patch needed to enable to wireless in madwifi but as yet it has not had any reply apart from a message saying it is being reassigned to someone else. I have atttempted to get the webcam working, but I think it needs a 2.6.2x kernel to work. I do not know about the special asus acpi yet, I have not looked at it. Michael. So we?ve created a new rootFS with current packages for the developers. This new RootFS includes : * COMAR 2.0 alpha1, mudur 2.0 alpha2, PiSi 2.0 alpha3 * ConsoleKit 0.2.10, PolicyKit 0.7, dbus 1.1.20 integration * hal 0.5.10 * GCC 4.3.0 * kernel 2.6.24.3 with bootsplash support * New service / init infrastructure, up-to-date system.base & system.devel Pardus 2008-RootFS 0.1 can be dowloaded from here[1], all PiSi packages included in this rootfs and a bit more (like kernel-source) are here[2]. You can use the setup procedure described here[3] to use this rootFS. I didn't receive much feedback then about the proposal. A few days ago I was reviewing the project ideas for gesoc and found one about profile-management to keep track of different configuration options and allow to easily change profiles. I believe it this might be somhow related as my old proposal (though it is much simpler than what I am proposing). I wanted to know the opinion of the comunity (and core devs) on my proposal and the posibility of it being a Gsoc project. Note that I would be interested in working on it (implementing it) even if it is not as part of gsoc but of course gsoc is a very good incenctive.
