When you run into GCC 4 problems, try looking at other distributions' packages for solutions. Most of the distributions have already migrated to GCC 4, so they should have found a way around the problem you've stumbled upon. Like Doruk said, you might be able to find gcc 4.3 porting patches in other distros or in upstream resources, like their bug tracking system, mailing list, versioning repositories (svn, cvs, git etc.), their IRC channel etc. You can ask upstream for a fix too. If you check all these places and can't find anything, you can do the porting yourself with the help of GCC's guidelines [1] If all fails, which is very unlikely :), you can ask for help from other Pardus developers as well. > Anybody possibly willing to take over the package if I am unable to fix > things? I don't think abandoning a package at the time of a small problem is a good idea. Since this is the Open Source, you will find help somehow and fix it, just use the resources I have written above :) The same goes for all the other packages you have removed from repo, unless there is a strong necessity to remove a package, I think the package should stay in repositories. Doruk and Onur answered all the questions about gcc4 and problems. Dropping a package just for gcc4 issue is not necessary. Contrib hasn't been merged to devel/ repository and there is no contrib-2008 repo being maintained :) But, of course, it's up to you. Is there any package that you want me to revert in contrib repository, Michael? In my opinion, "briquolo" and "codeine" can be reverted. "reKordmydesktop", "krecordmydesktop" can be deleted because better alternative stays "qt-recordmydesktop". I'm not sure about "eqonomize". If you say "homebank" is better than "eqonomize", it can be deteled as well and homebank can be merged to contrib. The procedure for merging new packages from playground still remains the same. == What do these mean? == devel -> general package development directory. 2007 -> packages for Pardus 2007. 2008 -> packages for 2008. As you can guess, when you commit something to that directory, 2008 buildfarm will build and place them in contrib-2008 repository. == What will I do when I make a new package for contrib? == Well, good question :) Don't worry, not much changed. When you make your new package and want to add it to contrib, you will again have it reviewed. After getting 2 OK, you will add it to "DEVEL/" directory. If it compiles well on 2007 and works, you will commit/merge it to "2007/" directory. If the package compiles and works on 2008 as well, you will commit/merge it to "2008/" directory. If doesn't compiles on 2008/, it means that it requires additional care :) When you fix it (find gcc4.3 patches etc.) you will commit the changes to devel/ repository and add to 2008/. Don't forget that 2007/ and 2008/ are stable directories, the packages in devel/ can be unstable. Let's make it clear; Think that your package version is 1.2, which is stable. It is in 2007/ and 2008/. The developer of the package has released 1.3_beta1, which is unstable and may not be working well. In this situation, you can update your package to 1.3_beta1 and commit the changes to "DEVEL/" directory. After some time, the developer has released 1.4-stable release. Now, you can update the package for stable directories (2007, 2008). Don't forget that you will update and commit it to devel/ first, then merge it to 2007/2008. == How can I update my working copy? == Just type "svn up" on your working copy directory :) == Is it required to add my packages to 2008? == It's not required but you had better to work on it for 2008. If you can't fix it for 2008 due to the lack of patches or something else, your package may not be in 2008, it can be supported only for 2007. Don't forget that it's an OpenSource world and someone may have worked for gcc4 porting of your package, just get help from google and other distros. Well, It's my fault that I updated libIDL on buildfarm via testing repository to build orbit2 successfully; however, the stable repository doesn't include new libIDL yet. So you met an error like this. You can install new libIDL from testing repository to workaround this. It will never happen again :) sudo pisi it http://paketler.pardus.org.tr/pardus-2007-test/libIDL-0.8.10-3-4.pisi
